Dave described and showed us the process of creating basket illusion. His process is:
Turn the form
Apply the beads
Darken the channels
Pick your pattern
Add index lines
Burn the lines
Scrub the pencil lines
Add color

A Message from Laura Uden

This month's program will be on how to make containers to hold the Beads of Courage for seriously ill children. These are artistic beads the children get when undergoing procedures. As their website says, it helps children "tell and own their stories, using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage and hope along their treatment journey." This aligns well with the discussions we had in January and at the February Board meeting about the club focusing on things that don't just benefit ourselves as members, but also benefit our community. The club has purchased enough materials for 20 boxes, and is donating these to club members, so come to Tuesday's meeting and get yours!

While we're discussing the importance of volunteer efforts, we're going to focus each month on one of the officer or coordinator roles. This month, we'd like to talk about the Communications Coordinator role, which is being performed by Tom Haines. This role is like the central hub of a wheel - all club communications are facilitated by this role, as is much of our outreach and marketing activities that help us get new club members and fund our club activities. Without this role, it would be very hard for the club to function. This role is responsible for:

1. writing and distributing the newsletter each month, including updating schedule infromation,     summarizing meetings and demonstrations and getting articles from others
2. attending meetings and taking photos of members in events such as the President's     Challenge/Show and Tell, and at social events such as the Christmas dinner
3. managing the website structure and its content, including monthly updating with new     information and photos
4. a future part of this role might include managing the Yahoo Groups site

Tom Haines has been faithfully performing this role with a cheery smile for 5 years now. He has made improvements to the website and newsletter but is always open to new suggestions and ideas. If you notice issues with the site's content or links, or have any ideas for improvements to the website or newsletter, please let him know. Also, if you have skills in preparing newsletters, we'd like to find a backup for Tom, for those times when he can't make a meeting. This is may be urgent as he has plans that may require him to miss a meeting or two later this year. So if you're willing to give Tom some help and learn the ropes, we would be very appreciative.

How Long Does It Take

If you are like me, you get this question several times a month: "How long does it take?"
This poem from John Styer answers the question.

How Long Does It Take To Make One Of Those?
Do you mean...
not plant the tree, but find the wood,
just 'see' the piece, (as if I could)?
to find a highly figured burl,
a crotch, an eye, or pearly curl?
And once I spy it, perhaps buy it,
inventory, store, and dry it?
Then saw or cut it, possibly I kiln it,
glue, imbue with fill, or drill it?
You mean, that once I'm satisfied
it's stopped the warps, checks, cracks, once dried?
And mounted on the lathe, to turn it,
(which takes much practice, just to learn it;
and then employ a gouge, or two,
or use a skew, which I don't eschew,
to mold it, shape it (what's your pleasure?)
by all means, I'm sure to measure,
then sand it smooth, please wear your mitts,
from coarse to fine, 10,000 grits,
then braze, or burnish, paint, or polish,
(the goal: enhance, and don't demolish)?
Is that your question, start to end,
how long's that path, its way to wend?
Or do you merely want to know how long it turned?
