Monday September 14
Photo Editing by Mike Lanahan

Mike grew up in a photography darkroom. So he has a built in interest and skill as a photographer. But instead of a darkroom his modern preference to photo manipulation is Adobe Lightroom. He showed us the features and ease of use of Lighroom. You can adjust Exposure, contrast, highlights, shadow, whites, blacks, etc. You can crop, rotate and other adjustments. If you use it, a good bargain at $10/month.

Peter Pipe Woodturner

A message from Richard Winslow:

I am sorry to announce that one of our senior woodturners, Peter Pipe, passed away Thursday night (October 1).
Peter has been a member since the early days of West Bay Woodturners. Peter mentored many of our members when they joined the club and was always enjoyed helping anyone who asked for advice. He was 96 years old and had a full life.
He started as an apprentice organ builder and repair man as a teenager in England. During World War II he taught RAF pilots to fly (still as a teen age boy). He supported his family in the U.S. as a writer of technical manuals for dentists.
His special interest has always been woodturning ever since he worked in the organ building business.
We will miss his presence at our meetings.

"As the Wood Turns" Segmenting & Insanity - by Dave Vannier

This month has been a month overcoming obstacles. Everyone knows the definition of insanity, doing thing over and over the same way and expecting a different result. This month I concluded that Persistence minus Insanity = Stubbornness.

I started working on this piece 3 weeks ago, attempting to address what I thought was wrong with the last segmented piece. After planning, cutting, and assembling, I turned it for the first time, with a few more turnings to go. So far, so good. Next turning, I blew up the top. Deep breath, start over making a top. Same process, got away with it. But then blew up the bottom. Both cases, the walnut failed. This time, a major failure. Ugh.

I tried to figure out why it blew up, and concluded doing it the same way again would end up with the same result. So, time to change the process. I thought I had been doing it the safest way possible, but the pieces just wasn’t strong enough to be turned. This piece has 12 segments per row, with only 4 in each row glued down until the inside is turned, so not very strong. This time I was able to finish it.

So, my persistence was very high, my insanity slightly less, and my stubbornness not to bad.

The result is a piece I like, but it has a different look than I expected.

The lesson I learned is that I need to work on lowering my insanity.
