President's Letter - Tom Gaston

Greetings, hope all is well. Another month is upon us with the election, Thanksgiving, and Christmas around the corner. Unfortunately we will not be having a Christmas party this year, and I anticipate no in-person meetings until at least spring/summer of 2021.

With that in mind, we have some tasks that need to be accomplished via email or mail. The board election is usually held at the November meeting. I will hold open nominations until November 5th. The current board members are willing to serve for another year. I will send out an email ballot November 6th. Mid November I will be calling members who haven't voted for a response.

We are also starting 2021 dues collection. The dues cover the cost of the monthly presentation presentations, web site costs, zoom meeting costs, Bridges Church donation for lathe storage and future meetings, insurance, and other miscellaneous expenses. Please send a check made out West Bay Wood turners for $30 to Jon Bishop. Address is in the members section and in the email I sent out earlier. I will also follow up with a phone call later.

"As the Wood Turns"
The lockdown and virtual meetings - by Dave Vannier

Another month of this lockdown has passed. Things are looking better, but we aren’t through this yet, so I hope you are staying safe and weathering the storm.

I’ve missed our club meetings and the friends I’ve made over the years. I’m looking forward to us being able to gather again at some point. I reluctantly joined the zoom meetings. While they don’t meet all my reasons for joining the club, I have to say it is far better than I expected. Several people are to thank for their hard work bringing in demonstrators and letting us share our work. (Thank you Bob, Don, Mike, and Greg!). I got motivated to try a “wheel of delicacy”, rather a 1/2 wheel, after the last program. I went and bought a mahogany board, 3D printed a depth gauge, and intend to give it a try.

If you haven’t tried out the Zoom meetings, give it a try! If you have, but aren’t regularly attending. Please consider joining us again. Among the program meeting, the show and tell/president’s challenge meeting, the sawdust session, and the segmenters meeting, there are plenty of opportunities to learn and share from members of WBW and SVW. Hopefully I will virtually see you soon!
