President's Letter - Tom Gaston

Greetings woodturners. I hope all is well and you are happily creating new turnings. I hope to see some of your creations soon. With the easing of the cover restrictions we are on track for an August 10th picnic (save the date), and resumption of in person meetings starting in September.

We hope to be again holding our meetings at Bridges Church in Los Altos. I would like to thank Leroy Nelson for being the liaison between the church and our club. He has been the keeper of the keys for the lathe storage, has helped with lathe set up and take down, setting up chairs, and so on. He will be moving to Santa Cruz to live with family so we hope to see him at some meetings or functions. In his stead, Al Holstein has agreed to become the liaison person.

Tom

"As the Wood Turns" Further Embellishment - by Dave Vannier

I got some Bay tree wood this month, thank you Dennis! Since I have been playing with piercing and airbrushing lately, this wood was perfect for making some thin forms, mostly endgrain. I got  lots of practice using a scraper and turning using a light to determine the thickness. They aren’t all as thin as I thought or was shooting for, but they are thin enough to pierce. My daughter grabbed one that I had finished right away.

I turned two different forms, with each piece having a slight different curve/foot/etc. some I really like, so are ok, one bothers me.

This process reminded me to take it off the lathe, step back and look at the piece right side up and upside down. Our brains just don’t see curves the same horizontally. You would think you could just turn your head and it would work, but it doesn’t. This is something I usually forget to do, but this rapid turning of forms reminded me to do it. Spin the chuck off, place it on on an uncluttered flat surface, really hard to find in my shop, step back and just take a look.

I’m sure we all have things we have learned or re-learned durning this shut down that we can share. What was it for you?
