August Meeting BBQ

August Meeting BBQ for WBW and SVW:
A monthly wood turning meeting that has no demonstration, no lathe, no president's challenges, no zoom link and...is in person!

This year we are meeting at a wonderful venue, Cuesta Park in Mt. View. It is just a short distance from Bridges Community Church (see address below )

Cuesta Park
615 Cuesta Drive
Group picnic site #1 (at the end of the parking lot - a short walk)
4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday August 10.

What we will have at this event is BBQ chicken, and polish sausage, various chips and drinks and a good time to share with fellow wood turners from WBW and SVC. You are welcome to bring adult refreshments and for those of you who signed up to bring side dishes please do.

There will be no wood raffle or silent auction this year unless someone just has to purge old tools or orphan wood. However, you are welcome to bring any new turnings that you want to show off as we will have a time allowed for show and tell. We look forward to seeing members from both clubs at this event.

The map to the location is located on the WBW website...or here:

President's Letter - Tom Gaston

Greetings woodturners.

Hope all is well and you are getting ready for our summer BBQ August 10th, 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Cuesta Park in Mountain View. As of this writing, we have about 40 people coming. It is not too late to sign up, so please do so and join in our first in-person event in about a year and a half. It is OK to come late if this is a work day or have previous commitments. Also, bring a turning or two that you have made since we last met in-person.

We are working on resuming in-person meetings with live demonstrations. If any of you have suggested topics that we should cover, or even better, can volunteer to do a demonstration, let us know.

Looking forward to seeing you at the BBQ! And, looking forward to seeing and touching your turnings.

You may sign up here

"As the Wood Turns" Looking Ahead - by Dave Vannier

Well, the light at the end of the tunnel looks like it is real! Those of you reading this can be thankful that you’ve survived a pretty bad pandemic. Let’s just hope we can keep going in the right direction. I’m so looking forward to seeing everyone at the BBQ and future WBWLooking meetings. While I’ve burned out entirely on zoom, just reminded me too much of work, ugh. But a big thanks to all who kept us alive and full of opportunities to learn and share via zoom. Don’t forget to thank them, it was a lot of dedication and work.

As we look forward to future meetings, we need, please share your work during the shutdown. It’s been a while, so I’m sure we you have some interesting work. I know some of us felt like we had lots of time, and we explored projects that ok significant time. I was told to do series of work. In the past, I’ve moved from area to area with no patience or desire to do a second or third or … variation. But, I’ve done 4 different ribbon pieces, ala Frank Sudol, a couple of fire pieces, and several piercings. Never would have taken the time in the past, so maybe being locked down taught me to have patience, I doubt it. I did learn a lot and have more ideas. I’ve tortured you with some of these pieces over during the pandemic. Now it is your turn. So, what have you been doing!
Dave
